Abstract

We give a special mention to the incredible commitment to fostering gender diversity in engineering of Dr Evi Viza which has earned the highly commended prize for the Gender Diversity Ambassador Award 2023.

Dr Viza’s research is centred on applying operations management, quality improvement and lean principles to solve industry problems as well as how they apply to the work of craft groups particularly in low resource economies. She has been involved in interdisciplinary research projects with focus on systems approach and sustainability, and gender diversity within STEM.

Her work has been recognised globally with a number of grants to address gender diversity within Engineering and support economic development for women in the Global South, these include ”FemaleINSPIRES” and as UK partner in 2 Africa Catalyst projects funded by the Royal Academy of Engineering, “Changing the landscape within Engineering and Physical Sciences (Equality and Inclusion in industry, academia and research)” funded by the Scottish Funding Council; “Building Manufacturing capacity for Kenyan Craft Women” by Global Challenges Research Fund.

The IET’S Gender Diversity Ambassador Award recognises the tremendous work being carried out by passionate individuals to change the perception of women in STEM. This award is presented to a person of any gender, working in the UK and of any age who has spent a large proportion of their career committed to addressing the gender imbalance within the engineering profession.

The University of the West of Scotland, Program Leader MSc Quality Management

I am a public, private and more recently higher education professional with focus on performance and quality management. I have experience on project management, lean management, business excellence frameworks, industrial management and big data. I have also successfully delivered teaching and training to diverse participants on the above topics. My background is multi-disciplinary. I started as a Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineer and then I got involved with Quality Management, Performance Management and Project Management. My current post involves teaching (Engineering Management), research (interdisciplinary projects of Engineering, Education, Arts and Culture) and public engagement (focus on Primary schools and gender balance). In the past I had been heavily involved with the Equalities and Human Rights agenda. I have gained specialised knowledge on the Equalities legislation and delivered solutions for staff and senior management on how to improve upon service delivery and make a difference in the lives of vulnerable people and to satisfy the legal requirements. Diversity and Inclusivity is not just a legal matter, it is a necessity for a thriving society. This is of particular importance in the present day.Excellence, or more accurately the pursute of it, has been the focus of my studies and work to date. Aristotle quotes that “Excellence is never an accident. It is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, and intelligent execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives - choice, not chance, determines your destiny.”
