Abstract
To help us with the Engineering Open House Day paper plane challenge, aviation engineer and aspiring astronaut, Sophie Harker shows us how to make a wind tunnel with just a few things from around the house, to help us understand how planes fly.
All you need is:
Cardboard box – ideally at least 40 x 20cm and at least 30cm high that can be completely sealed/closed, no gaps, no lids or anything.
Few pieces of plain card
Empty yoghurt pot, like a muller rice pot or activia pot that is study when turned upside down
Cocktail sticks or kebab skewers
Hair dryer
Digital scales
Piece of clear plastic sheet – like an a4 bit of acetate – something see-through to create a window
Blue tac
Tape
Scissors.
And please remember when doing these experiments at home that you have a parent or guardian with you. Especially when using scissors to cut the windows and using the hairdryer!
