About the session

Session 7b  Session Title: Protection and impact of converter dominated networks and low inertia systems*
Chair: Qiteng Hong

According to Global Energy Review, 2020, by IEA, share of renewables in global electricity generation has risen to 28% in 2020 [1].  These Inverter-Based Resources (IBR), have different fault characteristics from synchronous generators. The substantial difference between phase angles of local and remote currents, impacts the accuracy of apparent impedance calculation in traditional distance protection [2].

IMPACT OF INVERTER-BASED RESOURCES

A 50Hz, 220kV transmission line test system shown in Fig. 1 is modelled in PSCAD. Bus M at which relay of interest is placed, is connected to Type IV wind turbine generator (WTG) and Bus P is connected to a conventional generator or an equivalent representation of the grid behind.
