Tutorial - We.B.1.T Future Optical Data Center Networks
Chongjin Xie Alibaba Group Abstract With the widespread use of cloud computing and internet services, data centers have become the infrastructure of digital economy and the main driving force for optical networks technologies in recent years. In this tutorial, we first present the characteristics and requirements of optical data center networks, then technologies for scaling optical data center networks are described, including data center network architectures, high-speed embedded coherent and simple pluggable coherent technologies, technologies to build open and disaggregated optical networks, network automation and intelligence, etc. Challenges and potential technologies to further scale optical data center networks are discussed at the end.
Speaker Biography Chongjin Xie is a senior director at Alibaba Infrastructure Service, Alibaba Cloud, working on data center optical interconnects and networking technologies and products in support of Alibaba cloud and online platform. Prior to joining Alibaba in 2014, Chongjin Xie was a Distinguished Member of Technical Staff at Bell Labs, Alcatel-Lucent, doing research on optical communication systems and networks. He did his postdoctoral research at Chalmers University of Technology from 1999 to 2001, received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from Beijing University of Posts & Telecommunications in 1996 and 1999, respectively. Chongjin Xie has published one book, 5 book chapters and over 200 papers, and served as OFC program chair and general chair in 2019 and 2021, respectively. He is a Fellow of IEEE and a Fellow of Optica.
