About the session

With a rapidly evolving electricity market seeing significant deployment of decentralised power, more involved and educated consumers and the need for increased flexibility, networks must transform the way they work, embracing new structures and responsibilities.  This session will explore the transition of the Distribution Network Operator to the Distribution System Operator, examining recent strategies from the individual networks and the collaborative ENA ‘Open Network’ project.

    ENA, Head of Innovation and development

    Randolph is the Head of Innovation & Development at the Energy Networks Association, and has over seven years of experience in the power and energy sector. Randolph is responsible for co-ordinating and delivering a broad range of strategic industry challenges, including the development of smarter networks via the ENA Open Networks Project, which includes the DSO Transition and other industry objectives. He has previous experience in the design and management of multi-disciplinary power projects in the Transmission & Distribution and renewable generation sectors. These projects were located across the UK, Ireland, Malta and Australia. Randolph has an M.Phil in Engineering for Sustainable Development from the University of Cambridge and has presented a number of conference papers on electrical systems and protection and automation design.

    Catherine Mitchell

    Catherine Mitchell is Professor of Energy Policy and the Director of the University of Exeter’s Energy Policy Group. Her research focuses on the governance and politics involved in achieving a low carbon, equitable and secure energy system (where governance is taken to mean the policies, institutions, market design, regulation and network rules and incentives). Catherine is very practice and internationally focused - having had Visiting Professorships at Berkeley (California), Columbia (NY) ; Freie (Berlin) and DTU (Denmark) over the last few years. Catherine has been a member of multiple national committees or Government Reviews; she has been a member of multiple large writing teams (including being an LA in IPCC AR5); she will be a CLA of the policy and institutions chapter of IPCC WG3; she has been the Chair of the Board of various institutions, both national and international in their scope, and is currently Chair of RAP, and Board members of CSE and ECIU. She currently holds an EPSRC Established Career Fellowship, IGov (2012-2019).

    Colin Gault graduated from the University of Strathclyde in 2007 with a Masters in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. After a couple of years as a graduate engineer working for Mott MacDonald he then moved to Smarter Grid Solutions in 2009. Since then he has been an integral part of the formation and growth of the company working internationally in the areas of business development, consultancy and product development. Colin is now Head of Products for SGS and is responsible for overseeing product strategy and the development roadmap.

    John Scott is currently an independent consultant with 45 years experience of electricity distribution, transmission and regulation. His previous roles include Director of Engineering for National Grid, Technical Director for Ofgem, and Director Network Innovation for KEMA Consulting.He takes a particular interest in innovation and sustainable energy systems, and factors critical to successful deployment of innovation on power systems. He was a founder member of the government’s Smart Grid Forum and has recently been a Non Executive Director at Smarter Grid Solutions Ltd. He is currently an advisor to the aggregator Pearlstone Energy. He also chairs the Industrial Advisory Board of the FLEXIS project. He is an active Fellow of the Institution of Engineering & Technology and has served as a member of the Board of Trustees, and is a Visiting Professor at the University of Bath.He is currently on the steering group for the Future Power System Architecture project (FPSA), which is being led by The IET jointly with the Energy Systems Catapult.
