Abstract

The increase in the number of devices used in buildings, that are based on semi-conductor technology and therefore rely on low voltage direct current to power them, has encouraged the emergence of single point rectification and distribution systems which can be made more efficient, through effective design.

These replace the growing number of localised low efficiency power rectifiers. The savings in energy efficiency and reduced localised heating through the removal of high l²R losses are of growing interest to building services designers and engineers.

Further efficiencies will be realised as alternative supply systems such as photovoltaics, are fed into direct current systems thereby eradicating losses introduced through inversion and later rectification.

Improvements in cost, energy efficiency and power quality are key drivers for global development and adoption of DC energy systems, based on both standardised and proprietary solutions. With this, good design, installation and operation practices remain key to successful implementation.

The Code of Practice for Low and Extra Low Voltage Direct Current Power Distribution in Buildings will help designers, installers and operators ensure the safe, effective and competent application of cabling/wiring installations for low voltage direct current power distribution in buildings.

    Blane Judd

    Chief Executive, EngTechNow

Blane Judd has been Chief Executive of EngTechNow (a government backed campaign to raise the profile and status of engineering technicians in the UK) since 2014. Prior to this he advised on strategic engagement for organisations including City and Guilds and the Norway Institute of Technology. He led the repositioning of the Heating and Ventilating Contractors Association to Building and Engineering Services as Group Chief Executive and gained a Royal Charter for the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE) as its Chief Executive and Secretary. Blane was awarded a Fellowship of City and Guilds in 2010 for his services to International work on engineering skills and competence, which included consulting the Malaysian Ministry of Energy - saving it $20 Million per annum in lost generation costs through a programme of competence development for power station operatives. He started his career as an engineering technician apprentice with the CEGB a sector in which he remained for twenty five years. He has championed technicians both as a volunteer on the Engineering Council senate, the Engineering Technology Board, and the IEE/IET Council, during the merger, as well as through his professional career.
