Optical communications have had a huge impact on transport, but all the switching and networking functions are still done in the electronic domain. This lecture discusses a few switching applications in which optics clearly have a chance to outperform electronics. Optical switching technologies for both circuit switched and packet switched networks are likely to become key in order to scale network capacity by another order of magnitude.
