Abstract

This is an extraordinary time to be an engineer - engineering and technology is continuously developing new ideas that will benefit society, individuals and the world.

There are many universal challenges ranging from the really big questions such as how this planet can support expanding populations, to practical problems in improving efficiency within a team. Engineers are at the heart of these questions as creative problem solvers with the skills to resolve global issues.

Research tells us that the next generation are motivated by doing something meaningful and giving back more now than ever before. We are faced with a vast array of significant and critical problems to solve that are in need of a diverse and driven group of engineers.

The new incoming IET President, Naomi Climer, will use her President’s Address to showcase some fantastic examples of new technology and ideas across all of the IET sectors including built environment, energy and transport.

She will observe how these changes in technology will alter business and economic models and what affect these will have on the likely careers of future engineers and technologists.

Naomi will discuss the effect of the Internet of Things on emerging technologies and the impact this will have on the balance between large corporates, SMEs and individual entrepreneurs.

It will change the barriers of entry for those considering engineering careers from the early apprentices to career professionals.

Throughout the lecture Naomi will explore how the IET plans to support engineers and will challenge the audience to consider the part they could play to engineer a better world.

    Naomi Climer is President and Fellow of the IET. Until March 2015, Naomi was President of Sony’s new global division – Media Cloud Services, based in Los Angeles, USA, with a mission to develop cloud based production services for all parts of the media industry worldwide.Previously, Naomi headed Sony’s B2B organisation in Europe (Sony Professional) providing R&D, Sales and Marketing, Systems Integration and Service covering diverse markets including media, broadcast, cinema, sports, security and healthcare.After studying at Imperial College, London, Naomi trained as an Engineer at the BBC and has worked in technical roles in BBC Radio, BBC World Service and BBC News as well as at ITV and in local radio.Naomi has become a well known thought leader in the Broadcast and Media industry internationally – winning the International Association of Broadcast Manufacturers (IABM) Broadcast and Media Technology Industry Woman of the Year award in 2014.Naomi has a strong interest in diversity issues and has been an active campaigner for gender diversity within Sony and within the engineering profession in the UK. As a result of this, Naomi was short-listed for a WISE Women of Outstanding Achievement Award For Leadership and Inspiration in 2012.Naomi has been an active contributor to the IET through the Communications Policy Panel and as a member of the Board of Trustees since 2010.Naomi has also actively engaged with the Southern California Local Network since 2012 and brings this international IET perspective as well as global industry experience to IET HQ in the UK.
