About the session

EULYNX is a collaboration of European railway Infrastructure Managers (IMs), developing standardised technical interface specifications for railway signalling systems. The aim of EULYNX is to open markets, accelerate innovations and achieve economies of scale. This presentation will explore the main challenges which we are experiencing in applying CSM-RA (an approach primarily designed for deployment of actual solutions onto the railway) to assure the EULYNX interface specifications

    David Shipman

    Network Rail, Innovations Engineering Manager

David’s 20+ years of experience in the railway industry have primarily been spent working closely with new technologies and developments, both within the supply chain and, since 2007, with Network Rail. His career began as part of the team developing the original WCML Train Control System proposals, which came full circle when he undertook the role of Programme Engineering Manager for NR’s ETCSand Traffic Management delivery team in Infrastructure Projects. In between these assignments he has been involved throughout the project lifecycle on a number of infrastructure and systems development projects with a signalling and systems bias but regularly involving multidisciplinary elements, building a breadth of experience and understanding of project delivery, and leading on adoption and embedding of Systems Engineering principles throughout NR’s project delivery organisation. His current role heading up the Signalling Innovations Group was a natural progression, providing the perfect opportunity to support and influence the introduction of new technologies and processes, not just in signalling but for products and design technology across multi-discipline applications. Responsibilities range from the day to day delivery of infrastructure surveys using the latest technologies designed to remove the workforce from the operational railway, and support of a range of innovative design tools, through to advanced research and development activities looking at adopting the latest technologies from outside the railway industry to achieve further advancements in design tools and signalling products.David has also taken on the role of Assurance Lead for the EULYNX project, which brings together a dozen European Infrastructure Managers in developing standardised interfaces between signalling equipment, leading the assurance activities to enable all IM’s to adopt the specifications directly and shaping the certification and testing processes that will endorse the systems that implement these interfaces.

    Stephen Bull

    Ebeni Limited, Principal Safety Engineer

Stephen is an accomplished expert with over 20 years of experience in development and assurance of safety critical systems in railway signalling, aviation and defence environments. Stephen’s broad experience and understanding enable him to act as an effective strategic advisor in the design and delivery of safety assurance programmes across industry sectors.Stephen has developed safety cases for UK and international airports, and for multiple UK railway developments (both Network Rail and London Underground). He always supports his safety cases with rigorous detailed analysis and evidence to back up the arguments made. He has a record of successful presentation to sceptical third parties (e.g. ISAs and customer acceptance panels). He has also participated in cross-European research and development projects, both in the aviation and railway sectors.Stephen’s early career included software engineering (SPARK Ada and C), giving a valuable insight into successful safety engineering and safety management of software intensive systems.
