About the session

With a rapidly evolving electricity market seeing significant deployment of decentralised power, more involved and educated consumers and the need for increased flexibility, networks must transform the way they work, embracing new structures and responsibilities.  This session will explore the transition of the Distribution Network Operator to the Distribution System Operator, examining recent strategies from the individual networks and the collaborative ENA ‘Open Network’ project.

    Catherine Mitchell

    IGOV

    Catherine Mitchell is Professor of Energy Policy and the Director of the University of Exeter’s Energy Policy Group. Her research focuses on the governance and politics involved in achieving a low carbon, equitable and secure energy system (where governance is taken to mean the policies, institutions, market design, regulation and network rules and incentives). Catherine is very practice and internationally focused - having had Visiting Professorships at Berkeley (California), Columbia (NY) ; Freie (Berlin) and DTU (Denmark) over the last few years. Catherine has been a member of multiple national committees or Government Reviews; she has been a member of multiple large writing teams (including being an LA in IPCC AR5); she will be a CLA of the policy and institutions chapter of IPCC WG3; she has been the Chair of the Board of various institutions, both national and international in their scope, and is currently Chair of RAP, and Board members of CSE and ECIU. She currently holds an EPSRC Established Career Fellowship, IGov (2012-2019).
