Abstract

This lecture will explore how advancements in Nuclear technology are unlocking the potential in this concept for a small, resilient fission power source.  We will discuss potential applications (including terrestrial power generation and industrial heat supply, maritime, and space power and propulsion) and consider strategies to overcome challenges in bringing the product to market, concluding with an overview of the opportunity for UK academia and industry.

    Rolls Royce, Chief Design Engineer - Novel Nuclear & Special Projects

    James Montgomery is Chief Design Engineer for Rolls-Royce’s ‘Advanced Modular Reactor’, a new product line under development to provide resilient power for both Terrestrial and Extra-terrestrial users. James’ 19-year career at Rolls-Royce has included design roles on the Marine Trent engine (powering the Queen Elizabeth class aircraft carriers), on the Trent 900 (powering the Airbus A380) and in the team tasked with developing Additive Layer Manufacturing for the Company. James progressed to Assistant Chief Design Engineer for the Trent XWB (powering the Airbus A350), before joining the Advanced Modular Reactor project in 2022.
