About the session

This presentation discusses: delivering a large-scale transport project (technical aspects and challenges); the benefits of a system engineering (SE) approach; the right "railway system"; the business case and customer focus; the SE approach to HS2 Phase 1 (the current place in the project development cycle, where this fits into the SE Vee lifecycle, the modelling performed, operations, traction power, tunnel ventilation, developing the operations and maintenance concepts, and requirements definition); and a brief description of key aspects of the Phase 1 railway systems design to date (a description of the route diagram, maintenance provisions, the Network Integrated Control Centre, integrated multifunctional sites and the tunnel ventilation system).

    Technical Director, Parsons BrinckerhoffAndrew Shepherd has over 30 years of experience in all aspects of programme management, railway engineering and operations, and business management in the public and private sectors. Through his involvement in national and international rail projects he has gained an exceptional understanding of railway systems and how to deliver an integrated railway with new technologies such as GSM-R and ETCS under budget and ahead of target opening date. Andrew currently serves as Parsons Brinckerhoff's Project Director for the design of the high speed and conventional rail systems for Phase 1 of the new high speed railway: Responsible for delivering operations and maintenance plans, and the designs of all rail systems for Phase 1 of the HS2 infrastructure covering track, tunnel ventilation and other tunnel systems, energy systems, communications and train control. Previous programme experience includes roles as Delivery Manager for Control Systems on Transport for London’s successful amp;#163;1BN East London Line project, which was delivered ahead of programme and to budget; and 'Agent' to the Secretary of State for Transport for the Jubilee Line Extension Project among others. He also has a wider interest in the practice of Systems Engineering; and serves on the company's Technical Leadership Team as Sector Representative for Systems Engineering.
