Intelligent asset management for remote condition monitoring
Integrating train, track and station data with maintenance systems

With the increased pace of urbanisation and the demand for faster, greener, quieter and more reliable rail, developing intelligent and integrated rail infrastructure and systems is key to modernising our current network and keeping pace with the surrounding demands and advances in technology.

    University of Birmingham, Lecturer

    Dr John Easton is a Lecturer with the Birmingham Centre for Railway Research and Education at the University of Birmingham. His research interests centre on methods for the storage, integration, processing and display of railway related datasets, in particular data representation and exchange via ontologies. Selected projects in the asset condition monitoring area have included the Innovate UK funded People Centred Intelligent Predict and Prevent (PCIPP) project, the TRIME third-rail monitoring system, which in 2012 was the joint winner of the Stephenson Award for Engineering Innovation at the National Rail Awards, and a range of EU-funded projects (INTERAIL, AUTOMAIN, ON-TIME, Capacity4Rail). John is also heavily involved in the Centre’s £1.65 million Strategic Partnership with Network Rail on the theme of data management and integration.
