About the session

Cognitive technologies, drawn from a broad spectrum of advanced and emerging tech, data and digital capabilities, will become pervasive over the next five years. They are already creating opportunities for the retail eco-system to drive differentiation and optimisation across a broad surface area from customer experience and engagement, through complex and dynamic supply chains to the underlying business and technology infrastructures that provide the operating platforms of the future. In this presentation, Julian will explore the application of these cognitive technologies most likely to shape how we shop and how the retail market eco-system will exploit them take drive sustainable business performance advantage.

    Julian is a digital and business transformation expert ranked in the CIO Top 40 by Computing in 2018. He is VP & Executive Partner, Global Markets, leading IBM UK's business in the retail, consumer products and logistics industries. Prior to joining IBM, Julian was on the Board at House of Fraser where he was CIO and Executive Director of Supply Chain & Transformation. He designed and led the first major phase of their transformation journey to create House of Fraser's award winning multi-channel customer experience, ranked in the Leader's group in Europe by the independent IREUTop500 annual index in 2017. Julian was the first CTO of John Lewis and of Sainsbury's where in both he founded and led digital and technology transformation programmes to deliver step changes in customer experience, operational efficiency and profitability performance. He is an advisor to the UK fashion retail industry on digital supply chain strategies through his role on the GS1 Apparel Board and advises Business Disability International upon the role of technology in enhancing the opportunities and experiences of disabled customers and colleagues in the work place.
