Abstract

There is a lot of confusion and myths regarding the requirements in the 18th Edition  of the Wiring Regulations for the installation of surge protective devices (SPDs) and arc fault detection devices (AFDDs). 

The IET have produced a webinar to dispel the myths regarding the installation of AFDDs and SPDs.

    The IET, Head of Technical Regulations

    Mark Coles served his apprenticeship as an electrician with the UK Atomic Energy Authority and worked on many projects including the decommissioning of Windscale Piles 1 & 2, decommissioning of the Advanced Gas Reactor (AGR), Cement Encapsulation Plant, commissioning of THORP (Thermal Oxide Reprocessing Plant) and the Auto-Sampling Pneumatic Transfer System at Sellafield, Cumbria. He studied Electrical & Electronic Engineering at London South Bank University, subsequently worked as Contracts and Project Manager in electrical contracting at Canary Wharf and then held the post of Operations Engineer with NICEIC. Mark is Head of Technical Regulations at the IET and is responsible for the development of BS 7671, IET Guidance Notes and Codes of Practice. Currently, Mark is convenor of international committee IEC TC 64 MT 9 and CENELEC committees CLC TC 64 WG 9 and CLC TC 64 WG 21, he is also Secretary to JPEL/64D, UK sub-committee dealing with external influences to electrical installations. Other activities include articles for the IET’s online magazine Wiring Matters, articles for other IET/trade publications and public speaking engagements.
