About the session

Join us at IET London: Savoy Place to network with and be inspired by the most influential people working in engineering and technology today.

The night will be hosted by TV personality and presenter Rachel Riley, famous for succeeding Carol Vorderman as the numbers expert on Channel 4's Countdown and co-presenting the comedy spin-off 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown with Jimmy Carr. We'll also be joined by two inspirational speakers (journalist, author and broadcaster Angela Saini, and internationally acclaimed science author, public speaker and personality Dr Emily Grossman) before the 2018 winners are announced.

This is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate and be inspired by the achievements of some of the young women who are set to shape the future of our industry, and meet with a variety of like-minded people and companies who are working tirelessly to promote diversity and inclusion across the engineering and technology profession.

  • Dr Emily Grossman

    Dr Emily Grossman

    Dr Emily Grossman is an internationally acclaimed science author, public speaker and TV personality. She is an expert in molecular biology and genetics, with a Double First in Natural Sciences from Queens' College Cambridge and a PhD in cancer research. Emily has also trained and worked as an actress and singer, and as a maths and science teacher. She now combines her skills as a science broadcaster, writer, educator and trainer.Emily is best known as a Resident Science Expert on ITV's The Alan Titchmarsh Show and Sky1's Duck Quacks Don't Echo, for her fun YouTube videos for BBC Britlab and The Royal Institution, and for her inspirational talks in schools, universities and at live events such as The Hay Festival, The Science Museum and Cheltenham Science Festival. She is also an experienced communication and media skills trainer.Emily is a passionate advocate for gender equality and diversity in STEM and has come under considerable attack on social media for speaking out against sexism in science. She has delivered a TEDx talk at UCL on “Why Science Needs People Who Cry” and has been interviewed in many newspapers and radio programmes about the value of emotion in science.Emily was recently named as the second Honorary STEM Ambassador, alongside astronaut Tim Peake, for her pioneering work in STEM education and as a role model to young girls. Through her work as a science communicator, and by sharing her personal experiences as a woman in STEM, Emily hopes to engage more people with the fascinating world of science, to change the perception of what it is to be a scientist, and to inspire more people, especially girls, to study STEM subjects.

    Rachel Riley

    Rachel Riley first appeared as on Channel 4’s Countdown in 2009, taking over as the numbers expert from Carol Vorderman. In 2012, she began co-presenting their comedy spin of show 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown with Jimmy Carr. She also presents Friday Night Football and Fantasy Football Club on Sky Sports. Some of Rachel’s other television appearances include, It’s Not Rocket Science, (ITV) Room 101, Britain’s Brightest, Top Gear and Would I Lie to You (BBC). She has also put her own intellect to the test, appearing on a number of quiz shows- celebrity specials, including Celebrity Mastermind, (BBC1) Pointless Celebrities (BBC1) Million Pound Drop (Channel 4) and The Chase (ITV). In 2013, she appeared in the 11th series of Strictly Come Dancing and has interviewed A-lists celebrities such as Eddie Redmayne and Tom Hiddleston, live from the BAFTA red carpet (2015).Rachel is an avid football fan and in 2015, Rachel combined her mathematical expertise with her passion for football by hosting a segment for Football Focus (BBC1). She has also been a guest speaker on Soccer AM (Sky Sports), BBC Radio 5 Live’s Fighting Talk, talkSport radio and BT Sport’s, Follow the Football. She has also hosted alongside Ryan Giggs and Rio Ferdinand and presented an exclusive live studio interview with Andy Cole.Off camera, Rachel makes frequent school visits and has been involved in a number of national numeracy initiatives to help promote math and science to children.

    Angela Saini

    Journalist, author and broadcaster Angela Saini has helped change the way people think about science by exploring the boundaries between science, culture, history and politics.Her first book Geek Nation, published by Hodder in 2011, was a travelogue through Indian science. Her latest, Inferior, published by Fourth Estate in 2017, is a critically-acclaimed account of how science has failed women because of centuries of entrenched bias and exclusion.It was named Physics World Book of the Year and was a runner-up in the Goodreads Choice Awards. She is currently working on her third book, on the science of race, to be published in 2019.Angela is well known for presenting science shows on BBC Radio 4 and the World Service, and her writing has appeared across the world, including in New Scientist, the Guardian, The Times, Science, Cell, Wired, Wallpaper, Vogue, GQ, among others.She was the launch presenter of the BBC's The Food Chain and has hosted More or Less and Material World. Her work has won numerous awards, including an American Association of the Advancement of Science gold prize, and an Association of British Science Writers Award for best news story. She was named European Science Journalist of the Year by the Euroscience Foundation in 2009.She has a Masters in Engineering from Oxford University, and has been a Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She is a committed champion for women's rights and a campaigner against sexism in science, regularly giving talks on these subjects. She lives in London with her husband and son.

    Mike is the former Chief Science Officer for BT and responsible for the company’s world-leading research and commercial exploitation unit, including patent licensing and corporate venturing activitiesMike joined BT as a Technician Apprentice in 1972. He studied Communication Engineering at Plymouth and joined the Visual Communication Research Division at BT Labs in 1980.During his first 15 years with BT’s Labs his career has focused on the research, development and practical design of real-time audio/visual and multimedia communications systems.He has several patents to his name in the field of video compression and is the holder of two prestigious BT awards; the Martlesham Medal for R&D (1992) and the BT Gold medal (1994) for leading multimedia product developments.In 1998 he was elected President of the Digital Audio-Visual Council (DAVIC) a non-profit association based in Switzerland and representing 160 companies in more than 25 countries, focused on developing specifications for audio-visual systems. From 1999 Mike was based in Silicon Valley, California, USA where he established BT’s US Technology office and Corporate Venturing activity.Mike returned to the UK in 2001 to lead BT’s Research & Venturing division. He was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Technology from the University of Plymouth in September 2009. More recently he has been a Council Member of the EPSRC and a Board Member of Innovate UK.Mike is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and serves on the Board of their Enterprise Hub. He is also Non-Executive Director for both Ordnance Survey Ltd and Ploughshare Innovations Ltd and is Chairman of Astigan Ltd, a start-up based in Somerset. He received an OBE for “services to innovation” in 2017.Mike is married with 2 daughters and lives in Bury St Edmunds. He and his wife Caroline have spent the past 3 years building their own “eco” house and now look forward to having the time to create a garden as well as following their passion to travel.

    Ozak Esu

    Ozak started work as a graduate engineer for Cundall, a multidisciplinary engineering consultancy, whilst finishing her PhD in electronic and electrical engineering. Her current role involves designing buildings’ electrical services. Ozak Esu, graduate engineer Currently based in Birmingham, 24-year-old Ozak Esu moved to the UK in 2008 to study an IET accredited BEng in electronic and electrical engineering at Loughborough University.Graduating in 2011 with first class honours, she was awarded a research studentship to undertake a PhD, again at Loughborough.“My research investigated the instrumentation of low-cost electronics for vibration-based condition monitoring of wind turbine blades. The motivation for my research was to contribute towards reducing operations and maintenance costs associated with wind turbines,” she explains.
