About the session

Session 8A - Protection of Renewables 3

Session Chair: Daniel Randles, Senior Protection Engineer, Ørsted.

Growing complexities and changing behaviours in the grid require a revolution in how we model and test power system phenomena and equipment, and protection is no exception. Protection engineers are faced with challenges due to inverter-based resources, communication-based substation automation, cybersecurity concerns, and more. Real-time simulation and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing provide a flexible, controlled environment for testing against protection challenges and vulnerabilities – from HVDC to the distribution level. This presentation will outline new advancements for the RTDS Simulator which improve opportunities for protection simulation and testing, including support for IEC 61850 GOOSE, SV, and MMS communication together in a single merging unit, and network redundancy support via Parallel Redundancy Protocol.
