    Professor Tom Stephenson

Cranfield University, Pro-Vice-Chancellor - Research and Innovation

I am research active with a focus on biological wastewater treatment processes, including aerobic and anaerobic systems, fixed film and suspended growth processes, and nutrient (nitrogen and phosphorus) removal. I have also led research in water treatment processes and water reuse and recycling. Current projects include greenhouse gas emissions from wastewater processes, nitrogen transformations, novel fixed film bioreactors and industrial effluent treatment. I have previously worked on activated sludge processes, algal systems for wastewater treatment, biological aerated filters and package sewage treatment plant. Through a spinout company, I have interests in UV light mediated photocatalysis for recalcitrant pollutant removal. I am currently a co-supervisor of three PhD students on optimising and understanding a novel fixed film aerobic process for wastewater treatment, phosphorus recycling from wastewater and bioaugmentation to enhance industrial effluent treatment. My teaching interests are in preliminary treatment (grit removal, screens), biological processes and the business of the water industry. I am a regular contributor to 'cleantech' investment conferences. As Head of the School of Applied Sciences, I lead a £35 Million academic business which embraces manufacturing and the environment with over 300 staff and 700 students.
