This presentation discusses the following: time-division duplex (TDD) as an alternative option for UHF universal mobile telecommunications systems (UMTS); GSM half duplex, proven and cost-effective; and the small additional step to move to full TDD. With TDD, network time domain complexity and density is traded against simpler handset design. To resolve the TDD network timing issues, implementation of a UHF TDD network at a 2 GHz network density is probably needed, e.g. using existing 2 GHz cell sites.
