About the session

With the changing nature of generation and consumption, flexibility in the energy network has become a 'must have’ solution. But how what will it take to make it happen, and how can the industry create new business models and foster the innovation required to deliver transition? This session will explore the growing role of storage and demand-side response in facilitating flexibility.

    With a background in physical sciences and a passion for business, Peter has spent his career focused on building high growth ventures and technology commercialisation, primarily in the cleantech sector. He was CEO of a combined heat and power business that he took public on the London Stock Exchange (AIM) and then became Entrepreneur in Residence at Octopus Investments working with their venture capital team and renewable energy business. He then founded Origami Energy as CEO, with the vision of creating the real-time marketplace for the distributed energy world. Over the years, Peter has also been non-executive director of a number of innovative energy technology businesses and has also sat on public-private organisations including the Energy Research Partnership, the Energy Technologies Institute and the Energy Systems Catapult.

    Dr Azad Camyab has held senior business development and project management roles in the energy and sustainability sectors. He started his career with CEGB and National Power in the UK where he was involved in the development and construction of a number of CCGTs in the 1990s. He was previously the CEO of Marchwood CCGT Power company and was also involved in developing, managing and financing a number of IPP (Independent Power Producer) projects globally.Azad is currently the CEO of Pearlstone Energy, a Demand-side Response Aggregator in the UK. His focus in the past 10 years has been in developing and financing renewables and other low carbon projects and initiatives. He is an Associate & Fellow on the Masters course in Construction Engineering & Technology, and, the Masters programme in Sustainability Leadership & Industrial Manufacturing, at the University of Cambridge.Azad is a Fellow of The Institute of Engineering and Technology (FIET) and a member of Power-Gen Europe Executive Advisory Board.

    Jim joined the industry in 1991, working for E.ON in a number of technical and managerial roles in the generation business before moving into electricity distribution. Since joining Northern Powergrid in 2004, regulatory work has encompassed leading development of the business plan at the most recent price control review. Having delivered the UK’s largest smart grid project (the Customer-Led Network Revolution) Jim is leading on the wide portfolio of innovation activity and the delivery of customer propositions that support the transition to a smarter more flexible energy system.

    Joe McDonald is Vice President of Sales at Limejump. With a background in Law, he has spent the last 6 years within the technology sector covering Sales, Strategy and Contract Negotiation.Joe has been responsible for structuring over 200MW of battery storage deals with customers in the UK (50% of the nation’s inventory) and has grown Limejump’s Virtual Power Platform capacity to 1GW of renewable energy sources, one of the largest in Europe. Most recently Joe has been originating some of the first Solar PV - Battery combined Power Purchase Agreements in the UK. In addition, Joe has been recognised as a member of Forbes 30 Under 30 2019.

    John Scott is currently an independent consultant with 45 years experience of electricity distribution, transmission and regulation. His previous roles include Director of Engineering for National Grid, Technical Director for Ofgem, and Director Network Innovation for KEMA Consulting.He takes a particular interest in innovation and sustainable energy systems, and factors critical to successful deployment of innovation on power systems. He was a founder member of the government’s Smart Grid Forum and has recently been a Non Executive Director at Smarter Grid Solutions Ltd. He is currently an advisor to the aggregator Pearlstone Energy. He also chairs the Industrial Advisory Board of the FLEXIS project. He is an active Fellow of the Institution of Engineering & Technology and has served as a member of the Board of Trustees, and is a Visiting Professor at the University of Bath.He is currently on the steering group for the Future Power System Architecture project (FPSA), which is being led by The IET jointly with the Energy Systems Catapult.
