Abstract
In simplistic terms, a digital twin is a virtual model of a process, product or service linked in real-time to its physical equivalent. This pairing of the virtual and physical worlds allows analysis of data and monitoring of systems to head off problems before they even occur, prevent downtime, develop new opportunities and even plan for the future by using simulations. The idea and application of Digital Twins has been around for some time in a variety of sectors. However, it is only recently that the concept has come to the forefront in the built environment following the Centre for Digital Built Britain’s release of the Gemini Principles and their potential is huge. Not just in terms of how we design and build our physical assets but their place in the wider built environment and how we operate them. As such you will have surely heard as much about Digital Twins in the last year as you will have BIM since the 2016 mandate deadline.
But what are Digital Twins really and how do we avoid the inevitable hype surrounding them? Our panel of experts will help outline exactly what we mean when we talk about Digital Twins. What they are, what they are not and what is the true potential for Digital Twins in the built environment. In addition, the IET built environment panel will present their recent publication on this topic.
