Abstract

The IET Annual Dinner continues to be the leading engineering and technology networking event with 1,000 engineers and industry leaders from over 65 of the most prominent international companies and organisations in attendance each year.
This remarkable event brings together guests to celebrate the continuing brilliance of engineering worldwide and promises to be an evening that won’t be forgotten.

    Nigel Fine

    The Institution of Engineering and Technology, Chief Executive and Secretary

    Nigel Fine was appointed Chief Executive of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) in June 2009. The IET is one of the world’s leading professional societies for the engineering and technician community, with more than 150,000 members in 127 countries. The IET provides a global knowledge network to facilitate the exchange of ideas and promote the positive role of science, engineering and technology in the world.Nigel graduated from UMIST in 1978 with a BSc (Hons) in Civil Engineering and received his MBA from the London Business School in 1984. He is a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the ICE and IET.His professional career has included working for Experian Plc where he was Managing Director for EMEA and Asia Pacific and he was an Associate Partner at Andersen Consulting (Accenture). His early career was with John Laing and International Paint.Nigel is a non-executive Director of EngineeringUK and Chairs the Professional Panel of CEO’s representing the licensed Professional Engineering Institutions in the UK, and Chairs the Audit Committee. He sits on the Strategy Board of Education for Engineers and the Technician Council.

    Chair of Energy Systems Catapult and MS Society

    Nick's career within the energy sector spans over 30 years, culminating in his recent appointment as Chairman of Energy Systems Catapult. Prior to this, Nick served on the Board of National Grid becoming its UK and European CEO in 2011.Although the main focus of Nick's career has been within the energy sector, he also has a professional interest in the construction sector. A non-executive Director of Kier Group since 2009, he chairs the Safety, Health and Environment sub-committee of the Board.Nick holds a BSc in Electrical Engineering and is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Energy Institute. Nick was awarded a CBE in 2014.

    David Coulthard MBE We are thrilled to welcome former Formula One winner and now racing consultant and presenter, David Coulthard MBE “I am delighted to be speaking at this event and sharing my experiences with the audience, particularly given the engineering-relevance. It looks to be a fantastic evening and I look forward to meeting with inspiring people from all areas of the industry." Driver David Coulthard won thirteen Formula One Grand Prix, racing for Williams, McLaren and Red Bull teams. David Coulthard David dominated Britain’s junior Formula Ford categories and was the first ever recipient of the McLaren Autosport Award for young drivers. His first memorable battle was with future F1 rival Rubens Barichello for the British Formula 3 Championship; Coulthard was the victor, winning the prestigious Macau F3 Grand Prix. Appointed a test driver with the Williams F1 team, David was unexpectedly promoted to the team after the tragic death of Ayton Senna. He partnered fellow Brit Damon Hill for the remainder of the season. In his first season as a driver, he won the Portuguese GP and finished third in the Championship. He enjoyed similar success at McLaren, winning 12 of his 13 races with the team, twice supporting team mate Mika Hakkinen to the drivers’ Championship and finishing runner up to Michael Schumacher himself in 2001. Coulthard’s last few years were spent at the newly-formed Red Bull team and, on his retirement in 2008, he was the highestscoring British driver of all time. Since retirement as a driver, Coulthard has served as a consultant to the Red Bull team, and is a popular pundit and commentator for the BBC F1 team. In speeches he lifts the lid on the high-risk, high-pressure, high-tech and high-finance world of F1 and looks at the innovation and teamwork required to succeed in the world’s fastest sport.
