Within the next eight years, the UK must replace more than 15 GWe of closing generating plant. Whilst meeting the requirements of investors for an adequate return and the need of consumers for as low cost of electricity as possible, this replacement plant must have low greenhouse gas emissions and support increased security in the supply of UK energy. This presentation considers the role the potential and practicality of including coal in the generation mix. The options for introducing carbon capture and storage are presented and contrasted. The barriers to deployment described.
