Abstract

The Typhoon helmet-mounted display is a high-resolution, binocular system driven by powerful processor and graphics modules. Its helmet tracker is a high-speed, high-accuracy, low-latency optical system. The helmet displays 'virtual head-up display' symbology and video imagery from the aircraft sensors and from a helmet-mounted, image-intensified night vision system. The helmet's fully integrated design ensures the compatibility of head protection, life support, and electro-optics, and also incorporates the fully integrated respirator for protection in nuclear, biological, and chemical warfare environments.

    Sara Pullen

    BAE SYSTEMS

Perhaps Sara was always destined to work in the Aerospace Industry. Her Grandfather worked for Boeing building helicopters and her Great Aunt worked as an aircraft engineer on Concorde. On a family day out to an air-show at Warton Aerodrome when Sara was 15 years old she too caught the aeroplane bug. She thought ‘I want to work on an aircraft like that!' Soon after, she applied for a modern apprenticeship at BAE SYSTEMS during which she completed an ONC, HNC and HND. In 2001 she joined the Ground Support Equipment Team as a flight Systems Engineer. In 2004 Sara graduated with a BEng (Hons) degree in Mechanical and Production Engineering. Sara's current role, working with the Head Equipment Assembly Team involves the development and qualification of various components of the helmet which will be flown on the Typhoon in-service. Sara is especially interested in the duty of care aspect of her job and has managed a number of trials to see what affect the HEA helmet has on aircrews' neck and back as they eject from the aircraft. She loves this aspect of her job ‘At the end you have a product that you can put your name to - for me it was the first new Eurofighter helmet on its first maiden flight.’ In the future Sara would like to move in to a more specialist area of BAE SYSTEMS and in the long term she aims to enjoy herself in such an excellent career and industry.
