The Isle of Man TT Motorcycle race celebrated its 100th birthday in 2008. Originally founded to encourage and stimulate the development of motor vehicles, 2009 will see a radical innovation to take the race into its second century. The Time Trial Xtreme Grand Prix (TTXGP) is running a zero-emission motorcycle road race as part of TT Race series in June 2009. All bikes must comply with the stringent rules which preclude any harmful emissions. The rules are structured specifically to encourage innovation and the lecture covers some of the huge challenges that face the teams, and how this might evolve in future years. There are also very practical problems in managing entries. To this end, the IET is heavily engaged in supporting TTXGP, and is providing technical expertise for advising teams on compliance issues, as well as the team that will be scrutineering the bikes both for practice days, and at the race itself.
