About the session

The organising committee are pleased to announce that the 5th instalment of the IET International Conference on Railway Engineering (ICRE) will be held from the 12th to the 13th of May 2016 in Belgium. The 2016 event, which will be the first time the conference has been held in Europe, will centre on the theme of “Enhancing Railway Operations” and will include a mix of keynote speeches, technical sessions, and site visits. The ICRE is held every two to three years and aims to provide a forum for sharing knowledge and experience, promoting collaboration among practitioners, and reporting applications of new technologies in railway engineering. The previous instalment of the conference, ICRE 2014, was held in Hong Kong and brought together railway professionals from around the world to discuss the theme of “Integrating Customer Experience in the Railway”.

    Professor Andy Doherty

    Network Rail, Chief Rail Technology Officer

    Andy Doherty is an Ambassador for Network Rail leading Engineering interaction with the UK railway industry and within the European railway sphere. Andy is chair of the UK Vehicle Track System Interface Committee, and a member of the cross industry Technical Strategy Leadership Group. Andy is chair of a number of European Associations and Committees; he represents the entire European railway operating community as the Chair of ERRAC (European Rail Research Advisory Group) and with the ERA (European Railway Agency) as chair of the Group of Representative Bodies in Interoperability and Standardisation issues. Andy is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineers, he is an Electrical Systems Engineer, with expertise in; the railway system, rolling stock design, the mechanical interface between the train and track, transmission based signalling systems such ETCS and electro magnetic compatibility. Andy is a Visiting Professor at Cranfield, Southampton, and Newcastle UniversitiesPreviously Andy was the chair of the Network Rail Acceptance Panel for some 9 years, setting policy and approval of all Systems and Products used by Network Rail, and has held a number of senior roles in London Underground, including; Project Director and Engineer for the upgrade of the Central and Northern Lines and the conversion of the Underground to Driver Only Operation project.
