About the session
Session 1: Net Zero - Powering the transition
• The Government believes that the answers to the challenges around energy security, affordability and sustainability point in the same direction – clean energy. Investing in clean energy at speed and scale can help tackle the climate crisis, create good jobs and is the only route to protect billpayers and ensure energy security. This is why making Britain a clean energy superpower is one of the five defining missions of the Government.
• Renewables are key to achieving the Government’s clean power ambitions. We are committed to working in collaboration with the private sector to radically increase the deployment of onshore wind, solar and offshore wind by 2030. Delivering on our renewable electricity ambitions is integral to delivering our clean power by 2030 mission and accelerating to Net Zero - to boost Britain’s energy independence, protect consumers against high bills, support high-skilled jobs and tackle the climate crisis.
• Innovation is critical to drive down costs and develop new technologies. Electricity storage and low carbon hydrogen also have a considerable role in our Clean Energy Superpower mission and in delivering a flexible energy system. What are the Government’s policies in this to deliver a clean power system in 2030, and net zero in 2050?
