About the session
We catch up with the people who attended the IET’s Skylon event and get their thoughts on the evening. The presentation covered the need for better space transportation and the SKYLON solution to the problem. It dealt in part with the vehicle, but mainly with the SABRE engines, which are a hybrid of jet and rocket engines, able to airbreath up to Mach 5 and then transition using on-board oxygen for the final ascent to orbit. The principles of the engine will be described, together with the large experimental programme at Reaction Engines to develop the technology.
