Abstract

Railway Systems Integration is a critical aspect of delivering functional, reliable railway systems. It involves not just the technical alignment of complex subsystems – such as signalling, rolling stock, and infrastructure – but also the incorporation of operational, maintenance, and organisational elements to ensure that the railway system operates effectively and meets its intended benefits. The paper examines five themes – responsibility, complexity, staged delivery, scope, and stakeholders – drawing insights from major infrastructure and upgrade programmes, such as the London Underground Jubilee Line Extension and Crossrail.

Keywords:
  • and stakeholders
  • complex subsystems
  • complexity
  • dealing with complexity
  • jubilee line extension construction
  • railway systems integration

I was the System Design Authority for the first successful application of moving block CBTC signalling to London Underground and I have been deeply involved in the design of the interoperable areas of the 4LM lines. I have long experience of brownfield signalling projects including the first application of Westrace (Siemens software based interlocking) onto London Underground as well as overseas experience working on MTRC and KCRC in Hong Kong.I have operated at a strategic level, managing technical and commercial change as well as at the site specific detailed design level. A licensed signalling design engineer with over 30 years of experience in signalling principles and design for major project. I was consulted as a reviewer for the IRSE book “Metro Train Control Systems” (2022 edition). I won the Dell award in 2016 – an annual award to a member of the IRSE working on a London Underground project for “achievement of a high standard of skill in the science and application of railway signalling”.
