The presentation summarises the evolution of level crossings in Ireland, the introduction of Automatic Half Barriers in 1964, and four-barrier CCTV monitored crossing with the electrification of the Dublin Suburban in 1984. The introduction of a minimum wage per hour and the European Union Directive on the maximum of 48 hours per week had a significant cost of manning of traditional level crossing. Irish Rail studied the method of control elsewhere before deciding on developing two level crossing control centres to monitor 192 level crossings. All design aspects were developed in-house, building layout, Siemens Touch Screens and console.
