  • Part of event IET Seminar on Power Distribution for Signalling Systems

About the session

Railway signalling equipment has evolved from a purely mechanical process operated by humans to one reliant on electricity to deliver safety to passengers and trains. The signal engineer has crafted electricity distribution systems to meet the challenges of basic electrical technology which has stood the test of time but has sometimes given rise to large scale train delays. In today's business railway, new signalling technology and distribution hierarchies offer the chance to reduce vulnerability of signalling from the loss of power feeds. This presentation describes the change in the reliance of the signal engineers' technologies, the signal engineering as client to the supplier of power.
