    Duncan Botting

    Global Smart Transformation, Managing Director

    Duncan currently holds the posts of Director European Utilities Telecoms Council and Managing Director Global Smart Transformation Limited. In these roles he works closely with customers, academia, industry, government and regulators to deliver innovative technical, commercial, environmentally balanced and culturally acceptable solutions to market challenges. He also provides mentoring and business acceleration services to numerous SMEs to help them achieve their strategic aims. Some of his previous roles include: Business Innovation and Growth Director at Parsons Brinckerhoff (part of Balfour Beatty Group), Executive Chairman of the Scottish European Green Energy Centre, Managing Director ITI Energy (a research institute), Head of Technology & Business Development for ABB, Departmental Head of Schneider Power Projects, a Mathematician and Radar Modelling Engineer with Thorn-EMI Electronics. He has over 40 years’ experience covering the complete spectrum of technical and commercial roles from apprentice to boardroom. He is engaged across the energy domain from market design to end user delivery and is invited on many influential panels, advisory boards and committees at a National, European and International level. He gained his degree from the Open University in Mathematics and Physics. He is a visiting professor at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow and previously was a visiting professor at Imperial College London.He is an active member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET, formerly the IEE). He is chair of the IET Energy Sector Executive, a member of the IET Energy Policy Panel and Power Network Joint Vision (PNJV) group, founding member of the DECC/Ofgem Smart Grid Forum and a work stream chair and is serving on the DECC/IET/Catapult Board and Synthesis Team for the Future Power System Architect Project. Duncan is a current member of the EU Smart Grids Taskforce and Expert Groups and a member of the ETP Smart Cities and Communities working groups. He was voted one of the top 40 influencers in Europe on Smart Grids by his peers in 2014 (Metering and Smart Energy International). He is an international research assessor/advisor for competitive research programmes in various countries.He is a former UK Energy Research Council Advisory Board member, a former member of the Scottish Government’s Energy Advisory Board, former member of Birmingham’s Smart City Commission, former Vice-Chair of the European Technology Platform (ETP) for “SmartGrids” and co-author of the Strategic Research Agenda to 2035, he was also a founding member and served on the shadow board of the National Skills Academy for Power in the UK.In the area of energy and climate security Duncan has been a thought leader for over 20 years and has been contributing to national critical infrastructure working groups (DoE, UK, Asia), global corporate R&D and scenario building to inform and challenge board level decisions. He is helping to shape future thinking and deployment across the energy, telecommunications, technology and future cities sectors by challenging traditional approaches and using his experience to, hopefully, benefit societal outcomes.

    Gerhard Seyrling is the Grid Automation General Manager at Grid Solutions a GE and Alstom joint venture, in GE’s Energy Connections business. He joined GE’s Grid Solutions, when it was formed in 2015.Gerhard has acquired 28 years’ experience with Alstom Grid in the T&D Business. He began his career by holding various positions in the R&D of high voltage switchgear and power transformers, till leading high voltage switchgear factories in Switzerland and France.He then managed the Alstom Grid’s Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) Product Line, before joining the headquarters to manage the company’s Research and Development, Information Systems and Performance Improvement, as well as Alstom Grid’s Marketing and Strategy.In 2011, Gerhard was appointed as the Vice President Central & Eastern Europe, Russia, managing Alstom Grid’s business in Central & Eastern Europe, and Russia, based in Berlin. Since the Integration of Alstom & GE he became the General Manager for the same Region, now called CER (Central Europe Region).Gerhard graduated as an engineer in Electrical Energy from Austria’s Technical University of Vienna. Gerhard is member of the German National Committee of CIGRE and President of the T&D Europe Association.

    SP Energy Networks, United Kingdom

    Frank Mitchell leads a business with responsibility for getting the electricity from power generators to all 3.5 million customers in Central and South Scotland, Merseyside and North Wales.It employees around 2800 directly and another 3000 people through partners. Currently recruiting around 150 graduates and apprentices every year and training them on Smart Grid technology as well as the traditional role of working in major emergency storm events to reconnect customers.Frank has over twenty five years’ experience in working in the energy sector, covering all aspects of the power company value chain, in both the UK and USA.He is a professional engineer with extensive experience in the operation of gas and electric infrastructures and modern asset management approach.Frank has experience in leading large, diverse, geographically spread teams to achieve step change in performance. Involvement in M&A activity as well as leading strategic business change, his current focus is working with key external stake-holders including customers, governments, regulators, trade unions and investors.Frank also Chairs the Energy Skills Action Group for Scotland and works with local and national governments in support of economic and environmental goals.

    John Scott

    Consultant, Electricity Distribution

    John Scott is currently an independent consultant with 40 years experience of electricity distribution, transmission and regulation.His previous roles include Director of Engineering for National Grid, Technical Director for Ofgem, and Director Network Innovation for KEMA Consulting.He takes a particular interest in innovation and sustainable energy systems, and factors critical to successful deployment of innovation on power systems.He was a founder member of the government’s Smart Grid Forum and has recently been a Non Executive Director at Smarter Grid Solutions Ltd. He is currently an advisor to Pearlstone Energy.He also chairs the Technical Advisory Board of the FLEXIS project. He is an active Fellow of the Institution of Engineering & Technology and has served as a member of the Board of Trustees.He is currently on the steering group for the Future Power System Architecture project (FPSA), which is being led by The IET jointly with the Energy Systems Catapult.

    Western Power Distribution, Future Networks Manager

    Roger has worked in the energy industry for over 20 years. Originally joining East Midlands Electricity, industry changes have led to positions in Powergen, E.ON and now Western Power Distribution, part of the NYSE listed PPL group.He initially trained as an operational engineer delivering networks construction and maintenance activities. Roger subsequently gained experience in Control Room and Telecommunications parts of a DNO business. More recently he spent several years managing the IT functions.In 2008 Roger was asked to bring together his varied experience and establish a Future Networks strategy and small team of specialist engineers. The department are responsible for the business’s innovation strategy, delivery of demonstration projects and implementation of new solutions into core business activities.Key elements of the WPD Future Networks Programme are developing smarter local grids, leveraging value from smart meters and helping customers adopt lower carbon technologies such as electric cars, heat pumps and distributed generation.
