A strong theme of the 2019 conference is diversity. Following on from Femi Otitoju’s plenary talk on unconscious bias, we will hold a panel session, chaired by Femi, which will discuss how the scholarly communications sector as a whole can enable increased BAME senior representation.

Combining a scientificbackground with persuasiveand engaging training skills,Femi has been described as a “giftedpresenter”. She founded ChallengeConsultancy to provide training andconsulting services to the private, voluntary and public sectors.Femi has provided unconscious bias training to many publishers andmedia organisations including Sage Publications, Bloomsbury Press,Yale University Press and Guardian News Media.

Saskia workedpreviously at Informa where she wasthe first and sole diversity and inclusionexpert across the global FTSE 100company, responsible for the group’sD&I strategy and policy, and advisingand influencing on best practice from HR Director to Board level. Heracademic background includes a focus on globalisation, diversity andthe workplace, and she holds an MSc in Intercultural Communication forBusiness and the Professions.

    Elizabeth has worked in the highereducation sector and in library andinformation for more than 20 years. Herareas of interest are technology enhancedlearning (TEL), digital/information literacyand widening participation; where theseare employed in her current post asAssistant Director of Library Services(E-Services, Systems and Collections) atBirkbeck, University of London. She hasbeen involved with the Association for Learning Technology since 2013and became a trustee in 2017. She is actively involved in TEL developmentsin her institution, working with academics and the Bloomsbury LearningEnvironment consortium. One of her current projects is working with theplanning committee on the ‘Decolonising the Curriculum project’ at Birkbeck.

Nicola’s career hasfocused on leading change in libraries inorder to meet the demands of a digitalworld, with roles at the British Library, theSchool of Oriental and African Studies(SOAS) and Imperial College London.Nicola has contributed to a number ofnational and international initiatives in support of evolving the role ofresearch libraries and she has served as Chair of Research Libraries UKfrom 2017-2019.
