    Sophie Harker

    BAE Systems

Sophie is an Aerodynamics & Performance Engineer for BAE Systems’ Concepts & Technology team. She performs aerodynamic and performance analysis on future aircraft concepts, and leads on joint hypersonic and space concept work with Reaction Engines Limited.Sophie decided to become an engineer after she received careers advice from Dr Helen Sharman, the first Briton in space, who she met whilst at university. At the time, Sophie was studying Mathematics at the University of Nottingham and aspired to become an astronaut. With Helen’s advice in her mind, Sophie focused on applied mathematics and took a software engineering internship with BAE Systems. After graduating with a Master’s in Mathematics, Sophie joined BAE Systems on their graduate scheme. She undertook engineering placements across various aircraft platforms and products, including the Eurofighter Typhoon. For her final placement, she was seconded to Reaction Engines, where she worked on the Skylon spaceplane, which led to her current role.An active STEM ambassador, Sophie is currently setting up a non-profit to enable schools and institutions to video call engineers and scientists. Her aim is to make sure that no child misses the opportunity of a STEM career due to their geographical location. As well as taking aerodynamics workshops to schools and air shows, Sophie has given talks on the engineering vision for space and hypersonic transport and has shown that women like herself are an integral part of that vision. Sophie also sits on the Diversity & Inclusion Committee for the Royal Aeronautical Society.
  • Sergeant Daniel Hardwick

    Sergeant Daniel Hardwick

rgeant Hardwick is an RAF Mechanical Aircraft Technician with over 20 Years’ experience in aircraft maintenance, modification and rectification. Sgt Hardwick was the mechanical trade leader for Operation KIPION, managing six Tornado GR4 aircraft. Recognising an inherent issue with the design of the Tornado GR4 rudder extraction mandrel, Sgt Hardwick identified the problem and in his own time designed a tool with improved strength, reduced wastage of material, and aided means of extraction should it fail. Forecast savings are over £18,500. Dan also volunteers much of his spare time developing, and participating in, interactive STEM activities to promote engineering futures in local Schools and Air Cadet Squadrons.

    Trevor Grimshaw

Trevor Grimshaw started his career with the CEGB, spending the first 15 years commissioning and operating nuclear and fossil powered generating stations. During this time he was responsible for instigating and putting in place a number of major projects for improving operational safety and efficiency across the company. He then moved to the London HQ to take up the emergency planning role for the CEGB’s nuclear power stations and transport of civil nuclear materials. This took on a whole new dimension following the Chernobyl disaster. He joined a part-time team of UK experts working in Ukraine helping them to change their operational culture and processes to prevent another accident.During the privatisation of the electricity industry, he played a major role in the separation of the nuclear businesses and the formation and eventual floatation of what became British Energy. He also played a key role in the acquisition of more flexible power plant to complement the essential baseload nuclear fleet. As head of operational trading in British Energy, he was responsible for nearly a quarter of the electricity supply across England, Scotland and Wales. He took the opportunity to retire from British Energy in 2001 to work as a consultant advising ministries, regulators, market operators and companies on transitioning from state utilities to commercial enterprises. When the novelty of accumulating enough Airmiles for several round trips to the moon wore off, he really retired about 10 years ago, but he still maintains his engineering interests and hopefully a few active grey cells volunteering with the IET.Trevor has been a volunteer with the IET and its predecessor institutions for some 35 years and has participated in most of their activities at both local and national level, including accreditation, registration and fellowship, appeals and EC representation. He was chairman of a previous institution as well as chairing the SW Regional Network, PDAC, PDOC and Scholarship Committees of the IET.
