Dr. Kwan Rim is the Chairman of Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT), the central research laboratory of the Samsung Group. He received his M.S. in Mechanical Engineering in 1958 and Ph.D. in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics in 1960, both from Northwestern University in the USA. In 1960 he joined the Department of Mechanics and Hydraulics of the University of Iowa and was an engineering faculty member there until 1995. At the University of Iowa he was Chairman of the Department of Mechanics and Hydraulics (1971-74), Associate Dean of Engineering (1974-79), Chairman of the Division of Materials Engineering (1978-84), and Chairman of the Department of Biomedical Engineering (1984-90). He is the founder of the Biomedical Engineering Program at Iowa as well as the Iowa Institute of Biomedical Engineering.He was the 1992 recipient of the Outstanding Biomedical Engineering Educator Award from the American Society for Engineering Education. He also served on the Presidentamp;#x2019;s Council on Science and Technology of the Republic of Korea.
