Abstract

What is considered 'acceptably safe' within the railway industry? Join industry expert Peter Sheppard as he disseminates the latest approaches to the determination of what is an acceptable level of safety.

This lecture will explore the various approaches by different standards and industry bodies to how, on a qualitative basis a system can be considered to be “Acceptable Safe”. This lecture will look at the main approaches and be supplemented by the authors personal experience of applying them in his 30 years as a safety engineer in the railway sector.

    Peter Sheppard

    Ricardo Rail, System Safety Engineer

    Peter Sheppard works for Ricardo Rail. He is an experienced system safety engineer who has worked on the verification, validation and assessment of safety critical leading edge products and systems for People Movers, light rail, metro and heavy rail in the UK and abroad. He has practical experience of analysis of software, hardware and complete systems. He has been involved in the development of a safety critical software standard and is familiar with current national, European and international safety standards and their application to the railway industry. He is a presenter of the Ricardo Rail Common Safety Method on Risk Evaluation and Assessment one and two day courses. He is currently the Technical Lead of the Assessment Body for the Great Western Electrification Project. Peter is past Chair of the Railway TPN and current Chair of the IET Transport Sector.
