Rail infra-monitoring was introduced in the Netherlands by Strukton Railinfra in 1999 under the trademark of POSS. Since 2005, a total of 1,200 points are being monitored nationwide and a decrease of point failures of up to 60% can be reached. Switch heating monitoring and axle counter monitoring are also in operation. Test sites for level crossings, train detection and axle weight have been successful. In Europe, POSS is in use at sites in Germany, Sweden and Italy.
