We visited Mobile World Congress 2016 this year and caught up with Naomi Climer, IET President, Dr Mike Short, Telefonica and Prof Matt Wilson, Telecoms Cloud Limited to find out their views on this exciting show.

    Naomi Climer is President and Fellow of the IET. Until March 2015, Naomi was President of Sony’s new global division – Media Cloud Services, based in Los Angeles, USA, with a mission to develop cloud based production services for all parts of the media industry worldwide.Previously, Naomi headed Sony’s B2B organisation in Europe (Sony Professional) providing R&D, Sales and Marketing, Systems Integration and Service covering diverse markets including media, broadcast, cinema, sports, security and healthcare.After studying at Imperial College, London, Naomi trained as an Engineer at the BBC and has worked in technical roles in BBC Radio, BBC World Service and BBC News as well as at ITV and in local radio.Naomi has become a well known thought leader in the Broadcast and Media industry internationally – winning the International Association of Broadcast Manufacturers (IABM) Broadcast and Media Technology Industry Woman of the Year award in 2014.Naomi has a strong interest in diversity issues and has been an active campaigner for gender diversity within Sony and within the engineering profession in the UK. As a result of this, Naomi was short-listed for a WISE Women of Outstanding Achievement Award For Leadership and Inspiration in 2012.Naomi has been an active contributor to the IET through the Communications Policy Panel and as a member of the Board of Trustees since 2010.Naomi has also actively engaged with the Southern California Local Network since 2012 and brings this international IET perspective as well as global industry experience to IET HQ in the UK.

    Mike Short

    Telefonica, Vice President

    Mike's career spans 39 years in Electronics and Telecommunications, covering Technology, Innovation and Public policy, particularly in mobile communications. After running design and manufacturing for subsidiaries of Philips Industries, and Toshiba (then called Landis and Gyr) , he joined BT in 1983 and was appointed in 1989 as a Director of O2 UK (now part of Telefónica but originally called Cellnet) to launch Digital 2G (or GSM) mobile networks. He later went on to run the 3G business case and launch 3G in the UK. He has served as a member of the UK Govenrment committees on Internet and Broadband access, ICT Sector Trade advice and an advisory committees on London 2012. He was elected Chairman – global GSM Association in 1995 and then a Board member until 2002 ; and chaired the UK Mobile Data Association 1998 – 2008. From 2007/13 he was a Board member of UK Council for Child Internet Safety and an IET Trustee (elected IET President 2011/2012). He was also elected to the Board of ETSI for 3 years 2011/14 and Chaired the TSB backed ICT KTN 2007/14. Mike's Telefónica focus today is on European public policy that relates to innovation, whether research or new business development. This includes a focus on advanced mobile services and data applications including Mobile TV , Mobile learning, Smart Metering, Transport Telematics and Connected Healthcare, Emergency services and “5G” Research . He is a Visiting Professor at Surrey, Leeds, and Lancaster Universities ; a Board Governor of Coventry University and Ravensbourne , Greenwich ; a Fellow of IET/BCS/RGS/ Royal Academy, and recently appointed as a REF 2014 University Research “Impact” assessor. Mike was honoured with a CBE by the Her Majesty the Queen in June 2012 for services to the Mobile industry after 25 years industrial experience.
