Abstract

The IET is calling on its Everyday Champions - its 4,400 volunteers - to take part in a brand new campaign designed to celebrate the amazing work that IET volunteers do around the world.

Although the competition has now closed, the IET is still encouraging its volunteers to produce short, snappy, fun and creative videos – as individuals or as a group – discussing what they do to volunteer for the IET, why they enjoy doing it and how integrity, excellence and teamwork are important to them.

Find out how you can join in on our Everyday Champions webpage.

    Suzanne Flynn

The Institution of Engineering and Technology, Chair, Fellows Standing Panel

Suzanne graduated from Imperial College with a degree in Electrical Engineering and joined the RAF as an engineering officer. At the time, she was the only female graduate engineer in the RAF. She worked on the Harrier Jump Jet looking after the Inertial Navigation and Attack system: at the time an advanced system for weapon aiming based on analogue computers. She was the RAF representative on the Army Ptarmigan Mobile Area Communications System, this was the forerunner of modern mobile phones. Her last RAF tour was on the iconic Vulcan aircraft. After a career break, Suzanne returned to work on Electronic Warfare Systems at Marconi in Stanmore. Suzanne moved to Scotland in 1988 and in 1996 set up Cygnet Solutions, an ICT consultancy company, with 2 colleagues. Suzanne officially retired in April 2012 but has set up an engineering consultancy company, Swan Song Consultancy Ltd to continue some of the specialised consultancy she does in assessing software and firmware based systems for use in safety critical applications.Suzanne is active in her profession, and is currently Chair of the IET Fellows Panel. She is an assessor for the various registered grades of engineer and technician. She is a Past President of the Women's Engineering Society. Suzanne is passionate about encouraging more girls in to engineering and is disappointed that after many years of high level campaigns, so few girls enter the profession.Suzanne is married with two grown up daughters, one of whom has followed her mum into the RAF as an engineering officer.Suzanne and her husband Mike have recently taken up beekeeping. She loves travelling, skiing and going out, especially to the Opera.
