Abstract

Ever since the Stone Age, improvements to the quality of life have been linked to developments in materials technology, as new processing skills are developed and new materials invented. This same situation applies today; materials technology is the fundamental building block on which modern industry has developed and will continue to develop, for example, in the areas of computer hardware and aerospace.

    Phil Withers

University of Manchester, Professor of Materials Science

Phil Withers, Professor of Materials Science, University of Manchester Phil's main interests lie in the application of advanced techniques to assess the structural integrity of engineering materials and components. This requires information about the residual stresses and the presence and location of defects within structures, as well as the effect of the externally applied stresses experienced in service. To this end he has built instruments at central neutron and synchrotron facilities, helped to set up the FaME38 Engineering Centre in Grenoble as well as founding a Unit for Stress and Damage Characterisation in Manchester. He founded the Northern Aerospace Technology Exploitation Centre to transfer research innovation from universities into the aerospace sector and is a member of the BNFL Materials Research Alliance. Phil is a member of the EPSRC Technical Opportunities Committee (TOP).
