    Upside Energy, Founder

Upside enables households and small businesses to get paid for not using energy. We do that by using spare battery capacity in systems such as Uninterruptible Power Supplies, domestic PV arrays and Electric Vehicles to smooth demand for electricity. The idea was created for the Nesta Dynamic Demand Challenge, where we were selected as one of five finalists. At the awards ceremony on 26 June 2014, we won €25,000 and entry to the EU Climate-KIC accelerator programme. The Dynamic Demand Challenge was sponsored by the National Grid, National Physical Laboratory, Department for Business Innovation and Skills, EU Climate-KIC and Imperial College. We recently won funding from the Technology Strategy Board to develop a full-scale pilot of the service. Our partners on this project include Sharp, Siemens, Tempus Energy and the University of Manchester.
