Speaker

  • Dr Malcolm James Cook

    Dr Malcolm James Cook

University of Abertay, Senior Lecturer in Human Factors and Forensic Psychology

Dr Malcolm James Cook C. Psychol. AFBPsS RQTU is a psychologist with 27 years of experience in human factors.Originally a vision scientist he completed a PhD in target spotting which led to an involvement with the company then known as British Aerospace, where he commenced his contact with human systems engineering at the central research facility Sowerby Research Centre, which recently closed as a Defence Technology Centre.Dr Cook left and returned to University but continued to work on a range of problems and areas associated with the military in command and control (latterly C4ISTAR), distributed command systems (NCW/NEW/NEC), automation design in targeting and sensors, autonomous, supervisory controlled and mixed system design.Dr Cook was one of the first human factors scientists to identify the critical omission of human issues from the original conception of network centric warfare, and although an advocate for autonomous systems feels that human/system collaboration (joint cognitive systems) are the current critical stage of development.Dr Cook admires the work of Mica Endlsey (on Situation Awareness), Gary Klein (on Naturalistic Decision Making), James Reason (on Human Error), Erik Hollnagel (on Human Reliability and Joint cognitive Systems), and both David Woods/Sydney Dekker (on Failures in Automation). He served as a member on the IEE Human Systems Engineering Committee for eight years.
