Horizontal Innovation™ is the effective transfer and application of pre-existing technologies and knowledge from one industrial sector, to help meet a challenge or challenges, in another.
In 2016, the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) set a challenge to SMEs to come up with novel ways of taking pre-existing technologies from across industry and applying them to help solve a problem in the healthcare sector.
This is the remarkable story of 3P Innovation Ltd and their journey to realise a dream – their application of a pressure-release valve, as found in plastic ketchup bottles, to help solve the problem of urinary tract infection amongst NHS patients using catheters.
