  • Duration: 21 mins
  • Publication date: 05 Jun 2019
  • Location: Turing Lecture Theatre, Savoy Place
  • Part of event Ethics in Autonomous Vehicles

About the session

Over the last few years, new cars have been gaining more and more autonomous driving features to support the human driver and it is widely accepted that in the not too distant future cars will be fully autonomous or self-driving. Notwithstanding the complexity of software needed for a vehicle to recognise the various features of its environment for it to correctly travel down the road, the vehicle’s software is also required to make perceptive decisions which are easy for a human to make but much less so for a computer.

Speakers from key stakeholder organisations including academia, car manufacturers, software providers and religious thinkers will present their thoughts on the issues faced by the autonomous driving software. A small number of scenarios will be discussed using a round table café style format, with note takers capturing the output from each table. The event will conclude with a summary of the issues raised, proposed guidelines and future approaches.
