About the session

AI and Cognitive Methods To Predict Capital Delivery Project Health

Capital projects are notorious for over-spending and late delivery, with construction companies continuing to be brought to their knees by troubled contracts.
Why do we, as an industry, fail to learn from our mistakes? Is it because there is too little information, or too much?
Or perhaps we simply have yet to exploit corporate knowledge to solve these problems due to its unstructured nature.

In this lecture, IBM will explain how to unlock dark data with artificial intelligence and use this information to manage risk and predict outcomes. They will provide real examples where internet connected devices digitise the physical world, enabling cognitive systems to anticipate problems. Where engineers train a cognitive system to think like an engineer, so that it can in return teach them to think like a thousand engineers. And where the health of capital projects are predicted and corrected before its too late.

Benjamin Hempel -Ben is a Senior Consultant for Industrial Products within IBM GBS (Global Business Services) and a Subject Matter Expert on the Internet of Things and Cognitive Technologies. He works primarily with Engineering, Construction and Manufacturing companies to advise on the use of technologies to drive business outcomes. Within these engagements he works as a technical implementation lead and he has been working on multiple infrastructure construction industry (Water Treatment, Nuclear Energy) projects since joining IBM 2 years ago.

Chris Gage - Chris is Digital Lead for Industrial Products at IBM’s GBS practice. He works primarily with engineering, construction, real estate, facilities management and manufacturing organisations to advise on and implement new digital technologies such as the Internet of Things and artificial intelligence. His experience in the built environment spans ten years having worked on a number of major capital programmes such as Crossrail, London 2012 and HS2 as well as numerous other transport, utilities and property projects.
