The dominant interface to mobile communications networks remains the clam-shell or candy-bar shaped handset. How can an innovation-driven approach affect the form and functionality of these devices? The speaker believes that connecting new ways of sensing human condition and intention allied to future visual, acoustic, haptic and biometric sensing and actuation offers the opportunity to redefine the way people connect both to other people and to information systems. At Media Lab Europe (the European Research Partner of the MIT Media Lab), the 'Intimate Interfaces' research programme aims to develop innovative interfaces based on the above approach. This talk introduces a range of demonstration devices that augment our communications technologies and provides a direct, instinctive and authentic way to deliver human-centred communications.
