International Women in Engineering Day

The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE), the Chartered Institution of Water and Environment Management (CIWEM), The Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) and the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) have organised a live webinar for students from Year 9 to Year 12 to celebrate International Women in Engineering Day. The event aims to make students aware of the wide range engineering careers available to women via a debate on the premise “What is going the be the biggest engineering challenge of the next 50 years?”. Students will have the opportunity to send in their questions to the engineers on www.sli.do and using the code INWED2018. You can also use sli.do to vote for what you think the biggest engineering challenge would be!

The debate will be chaired by structural engineer Najwa Jawahar.

Brittany Harris

Brittany studied Civil Engineering at the University of Bristol. On graduating she undertook a three month placement with Engineers Without Borders and EcoSwell in Peru, assessing and designing alternative sanitation solutions for a remote fishing community. In 2016 she became an ICE future leader and won the NCE Graduate of the Year award, which she used to catalyse her campaign to engage engineers in their role in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. She continues to support the ICE in their preparation for the Global Engineering Congress (October 2018), and as an ICE super hero; Water Woman. She is now CEO of Qualis Flow, a data analytics platform enabling dynamic social and environmental risk management on construction sites.
Yasmin Ali

Yasmin is a chartered chemical engineer, passionate about the future of energy. She has worked power stations, in oil and gas, and on technologies for heating our homes. She loves promoting engineering, regularly visiting schools, presenting at events, and writing for the media about the achievements of engineers. Yasmin was awarded the Women's Engineering Society Young Woman Engineer 2013, and was shortlisted for the WeAreTheCity Rising Star Science and Engineering and PRECIOUS Outstanding Woman in Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths awards in 2017
Aofie Considine

Aoife studied Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering in Trinity College Dublin in Ireland before moving to London four years ago to take up a career in railway engineering with London Underground. After her stint underground, Aoife made the move to “big boy” trains in February this year to take on the role of Fleet Safety and Performance Engineer for Heathrow Express. Engineering has brought Aoife across the globe from Iceland to China, and she even spent a week last summer in the Mexican mountains filming an engineering TV show for Channel 4. In her spare time, Aoife can often be found in the studio or the theatre pursuing her other love of dance.
Najwa Jawahar

Najwa graduated from the University of Leeds in 2011 and joined WSP as a Graduate Engineer. She is an award-winning chartered structural engineer, who believes nothing is impossible. No muddy boots. No cultural or religious barriers. In her 6-year career to date she has worked on some high profile complex projects, including Merchant Square Development, Paddington; New Providence Wharf, Canary Wharf; London Wall Place and Key Bridge House Development.Despite being a woman in the male-dominated field, she initiated a graduate group and extended it to 300+ young engineers and apprentices globally in 2 years. In 2014, she was selected to be part of WSP’s Managing Director’s Taskforce Team and delivered two business initiatives including the new graduate development framework. In 2016, she was named as the top 50 rising stars in the Property services by WeAreCity and top 50 most inspirational women on Twitter by Women Engineering Society. In 2017, she won the Best Young Woman Engineer at the European Women in Construction and Engineering.
Lisa Swan

I am the Deputy Operations Director at UTC Aerospace Systems - every second a plane takes off with UTC Aerospace Systems equipment onboard. From space exploration and defense to today’s more electric, more intelligent, more integrated aircraft – our systems make modern flight possible. And by “make it possible,” we mean: we start it, power it, control it, ventilate it, quiet it, land it, stop it and monitor it. I have always loved manufacturing and am fascinated by how things work. The job I have allows me to use my technical abilities whilst also hopefully inspiring people to do a great job and to challenge “the way it is”. I also enjoy the sense of achievement which you get in an Operational environment.
Emily Bonner

Emily is a Chartered Civil Engineer working for Thornton Tomasetti, an international engineering consultancy, in London. She has over 5 years’ experience of designing structures for sports, office, residential and infrastructure projects and has experience of both new buildings and refurbishments. After completing A levels in Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry, Emily studied Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering at the University of Cambridge, graduating in 2012. In her role as a Structural Engineer, Emily has been responsible for the design of new buildings and major refurbishments. Projects she has worked on include Wood Wharf - a new district in Canary Wharf, Twickenham Stadium and Hackney Wick Overground station. In 2017 she attained her Chartership with the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and she is a Member of the ICE Council and Executive Board. Emily is also a STEM Ambassador, helping to promote engineering careers to young people
