Abstract
In collaboration with Manchester University and other companies, Arago Technology developed an insulating cross arm which can be retro-fitted to existing overhead line pylons. This innovation enables network operators to increase transmission capacity up to 150% when used with low sag conductors and therefore can avoid the requirement for new overhead line routes in certain applications. Insulating cross-arms have been developed before but structural limitations prevented their use in retro-fit applications to existing infrastructure. Arago overcomes this issue with its patented non-circular insulator profile that provides the structural buckling characteristics of an I-Beam, with the electrical and environmental properties of a conventional circular insulator.The IET Innovation Awards celebrate the products, technologies and processes that lead the way in engineering innovation.
