Abstract

The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE), the Chartered Institution of Water and Environment Management (CIWEM) and Intelligent Transport Systems UK (ITS UK) have organised a live webinar for students in Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5 on International Women in Engineering Day. The events aims to make students aware of the wide range engineering careers available to women via a debate on the premise “There has been an apocalypse and there is one last spot on the boat that will sail away to start a new beginning. Which engineer deserves that spot and why?”. Student will have the opportunity to send in their questions to the engineers via the twitter hashtag #saveanengineer.

A live debate with young female engineers across different disciplines will debate on the premise “There has been an apocalypse and there is one last spot on the boat that will sail away to start a new beginning. Which engineer deserves that spot and why?”

Roma Agrawal

I'm Roma Agrawal, a structural engineer with a physics degree. I've always loved science and design and found engineering to be a great combination between the two.I've designed bridges, skyscrapers and sculptures with signature architects over my ten year career. I spent six years working on The Shard, the tallest building in Western Europe, and designed the foundations and the ‘Spire’.In addition to winning industry awards, my career has been extensively featured in the media, including on BBC World News, BBC Daily Politics, TEDx, The Evening Standard, The Sunday Times, Guardian, The Telegraph, Independent, Cosmopolitan and Stylist Magazines, documentaries and in online blogs. I was the only woman featured on Channel 4's documentary on the Shard, 'The Tallest Tower'. I was part of M&S's 'Leading Ladies' campaign 2014 and was described as a top woman tweeter by the GuardianOutside work, I promote engineering, scientific and technical careers to young people and particularly to under-represented groups such as women. I also engage about these topics with our Institutions and government to understand and develop an effective way forward. Over the last 3 years, I have spoken to over 3000 people at over 50 schools, universities and organisations across the country and abroad.Please get in touch if you'd like me to present about engineering, women in male-dominated professions, speak to students or the media or indeed have any ideas with a view to promoting the profession!

TFL (London Underground), graduate Mechanical Engineer

I graduated with a masters in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering from Trinity College Dublin, Ireland in 2014 before making the move across the Irish sea to join the Transport for London Mechanical Engineering graduate scheme. This scheme saw me spend two years moving around the company doing placements in a variety of areas from track, to stations construction, to rolling stock, to emergency response and I even spent a stint driving Bakerloo Line trains!Since finishing the graduate scheme last September, I have taken on a roll as a project engineer in the Rolling Stock Renewals team. Our team carries out life extension and improvement works on existing London Underground fleet and my current role sees me leading projects to install new saloon LED lighting on Bakerloo and Central Line – a first for London Underground, and also installing saloon CCTV on Central Line to increase passenger safety and assist maintenance.Alongside my day job I am an advocate for promoting engineering to young people, in particular to girls. I am on the Young Rail Professionals committee where for the past two years I have coordinated volunteers attending events across the country aimed at school children and university students to encourage them to consider a career in rail. I also sit on the IMechE Rail Division Young Members committee and am organising this year’s Young Engineer’s Railway Seminar in conjunction with the IET. In 2015/2016, I was a member of the YMP and organised the Young Trophy and the Engineering Your Future event which drew over 100 pupils from across London.In 2016, I also won the IMechE Speak Out for Engineering London region competition for a talk I gave on the engineering of ballet.
Ethel Cortegana

Geotechnical Engineer

Ethel is a 31-year-old Civil Engineer with 6 years of experience, specialised in the Geotechnical Field, working in London for a multidisciplinary consultancy, called Mott MacDonald from September 2014. Originally from Peru; Ethel was born in a small town that was created as part of the construction of the biggest Hydroelectrical Power Station in South America at the 80’s – where her father worked as civil engineer. Ethel is grateful about knowing this profession since early in her life. She moved to Lima when she was 3 years old, where she studied primary, secondary and university in this 10-million-population city which is in the process of reducing the levels of mainly sexism and racism among many other social problems. As you can imagine, working in a male-dominated environment, such the civil engineering one is, challenging most of the times. Ethel decided to study Civil Engineering when she was 16 and she knew that she wanted to become Geotechnical Engineer from the age of 19. That year, she started working as an intern in a medium-size company specialised in ground investigations where she was assigned to carry out major managerial/technical tasks despite her age. After finishing university, Ethel worked in the technical office of a company specialised on the design and construction of anchored walls, slope stabilisation systems, special deep foundations, etc., for two years. A couple of years later, Ethel got a training placement for two months in Santiago de Chile – this was her first experience abroad. In 2012, Ethel got a full scholarship from the Spanish Government to study a Master in Soil Mechanics in Cedex (Spanish Centre for Research and Experimentation for public works). In 2013, she moved to London looking for better professional development and experience opportunities. She got a job as Monitoring Engineer for a contractor company in the Crossrail Project. A year later, Ethel started the MSc in Soil Mechanics and Environmental Geotechnics in Imperial College London; and in September 2014, she started working in Mott MacDonald as Geotechnical Engineer. Since then, she has specialised in the design of piles, reinforced earth walls, retailing walls, earthworks, etc. The projects in which she has been involved are mainly for the areas of railways, land reclamation, flood defences, bridges, and tunnels.
Yasmin Ali

"Yasmin is a chemical engineer in the energy industry, with experience in coal and gas-fired power stations, as well as the UK oil and gas sector. Outside of work Yasmin is a keen volunteer and dedicates much of her time to promoting engineering at schools, career fairs and festivals, with a variety of organisations including the IET, IChemE, and WES. She is also passionate about informing the public about engineering through the media, and has worked with the BBC's science unit. Yasmin also enjoys stand-up comedy, music and sports!"
Angela Dhaliwal

Water & Environmental Engineer

Angela is a Hydrologist with six years’ experience in the water industry. She gained a degree in Environmental Sciences with a focus on environmental and water modelling. She undertook study projects and internships in researchadministration and industry to help decide on her career path. After graduating, Angela became a Hydrological Researcher at Potsdam University, Germany, and looked at water management and greenhouse gas mitigation for rice production in India. She then joined the engineering consultancy Amec Foster Wheeler in 2011. Here she is part of the 70 strong Water Management team, which is spread across 7 offices in the UK. Angela covers two main areas of water management: water resources and flood risk. In water resources, Angela works with water companies to help plan secure water supplies to customers. This includes running computer models to determine how much water will be available from the environment, taking into account the impact of climate change; and balancing supplies with future needs for drinking water from the population. In flood risk, Angela helps plan major infrastructure projects, such as power stations, electricity grid connections, quarries, wind farms and housing developments. She examines the flood risk to and from the proposed developments to ensure they are placed in areas of lower flood risk and that they do not increase flood risk to others. If necessary, Angela uses computer models to simulate the extent and depth of flooding from rainfall, rivers or the sea.“
Mara Makoni Transportation Systems

Mara has worked for Mouchel as a consultant for over three years. She is one of the co-founders of the Young Professionals in ITS (UK) interest group and currently serves as the group’s chair. She is also an active member of the women in ITS interest group. She has previously worked in international development and as a new product introduction consultant for technology firms. She graduated from the Loughborough University with a degree in Systems Engineering and a Masters in Sustainable Development from Cambridge University.
Emily Bonner

Civil & Structural Engineer

Emily is a Chartered Civil Engineer working for Mott MacDonald in the Buildings team in London. She has over 4 years’ experience of designing structures for sports, office, residential and infrastructure projects and has experience of both new buildings and refurbishments.After completing A levels in Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry, Emily studied Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering at the University of Cambridge. She graduated in 2012 and began working for Mott MacDonald, an international engineering consultancy.In her role as a Structural Engineer, Emily has been responsible for the design of new buildings and major refurbishments. Projects she has worked on include Twickenham Stadium, Wembley Stadium and Hackney Wick Overground station. She has recently attained her Chartership with the Institution of Civil Engineers. Emily is STEM Ambassador, helping to promote engineering careers to young people, and part of the Working Party for Teambuild, a competition for young professionals in the construction industry.
