About the session
Creating intelligent radiation detection networks to defend against nuclear terrorism
The threat from terrorists of the detonation of a 'dirty bomb', i.e. a device using conventional explosives surrounded by nuclear material, is real. Kromek has developed a system that can provide early detection of threat materials which can be networked across a whole city, in effect a radiation surveillance system.
The judging panel commented:
“This is an impressive innovation of a low-cost and widely-deployable radiation detector that could greatly aid security, especially in large and crowded cities. A successful DARPA program has resulted in a significant early order with the potential for this to be rolled out all around the world.”
